This page is dedicated to highlighting the injustice that is being carried out against Kifle Tigineh Abate, a political prisoner of conscience in Ethiopia.
Kifle Tigneh Abate is an elected member of the Ethiopian Parliament. He received 74% of the vote in his district in Addis Ababa during the May 2005 elections. He has been an activist throughout of his life. The hallmark of his work has been seeking just solutions to improve the lives of Ethiopians through peaceful negotiation.
Kifle received a BA in Political Science and Public Administration from Pepperdine College, Los Angeles, and an MA in Political Science, Government and International Relations from California State University in the United States.
From 1964 - 1966 Kifle worked for Ethiopian Airlines. From 1970-1978, he worked for the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia initially as a Public Relations Officer and then as Assistant Manager of the Business Development Division.
From 1970- to 1978 he worked in the Business Development Division Commercial Bank of Ethiopia managing public relations; during the latter three years he was the assistant manager in that division. Since 1983 he has been a businessman.
Kifle has been an activist most of his life. The hallmark of this activism has been in seeking just solutions to improve the lives of Ethiopians through peaceful negotiation. From 1973-1975 he was President of the Employees Union of the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia and Savings & Mortgage Bank of Ethiopia. He led successful negotiations for the first collective agreement in the Ethiopia. In 1992, he became a member of the Central Committee of the Ethiopia Democratic Action Group. Between 1994-1997 he was Vice Chairman of the Joint Political Forum. Between 1995-2000 he was Vice Chairman of the Council of Alternative Forces for Peace and Democracy (CAFPDE). From 2001 he was an Executive Committee member of the United Ethiopian Democratic Part in charge of organizational affairs and merger negotiations. In the May 15th 2005 elections he was elected to the Ethiopian Parliament. |
